The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ibadan Branch, has urged engineers to embrace innovation and develop solutions capable of strengthening national security, protecting critical infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.
The Chairman of the branch, Mr Ayokunnu Ojedele, made the call in Ibadan while unveiling activities for the 2026 Engineering Week, themed “Engineering Innovation for National Security, Critical Infrastructure Protection and Sustainable Development in Nigeria.”
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ojedele said the theme was chosen to address Nigeria’s pressing security and developmental challenges, urging engineers to take the lead in providing practical solutions.
He said the branch was also prioritising young engineers through its Young Engineers Programme, which focuses on innovation, leadership and sustainable development.
Ojedele said the programme would expose young engineers to emerging fields including artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0, smart infrastructure and renewable energy.
“We cannot afford to remain spectators at this stage of rapid technological transformation. Our young engineers must be innovators, problem-solvers, entrepreneurs, ethical professionals and responsible leaders,” he said.
He also disclosed plans to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry through seminars and practical engagements for young and student engineers.
Other activities scheduled for the engineering week include a symposium and exhibition, technical visits to critical road projects, an Annual General Meeting, election of new executives, induction of members, dinner and awards.
The programme will also feature discussions on engineering practice in the era of artificial intelligence and digital transformation, as well as a courtesy visit to the Olubadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja.
