Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence assistant has surpassed one billion monthly active users, marking a major milestone for the technology company and making Gemini the fastest growing product in Google’s history.
Google confirmed the milestone on Tuesday, with Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai announcing that the Gemini app had crossed the one billion monthly user mark. The achievement comes as competition intensifies among leading artificial intelligence companies to build products capable of attracting hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
Gemini’s growth has accelerated significantly over the past year. The application had more than 750 million monthly active users by the end of 2025 before reaching about 950 million in July 2026. Crossing one billion users only weeks later demonstrates the rapid pace at which consumers are adopting AI assistants for everyday activities.
Google said the one billion figure refers specifically to people using the Gemini app across the web, Android, iOS and Gemini in Chrome. It does not represent the total number of people exposed to Gemini technology through other Google products such as Search and Workspace.
The rapid expansion has been supported by the growing range of tasks Gemini can perform. Beyond traditional text conversations, the assistant supports voice interactions, image generation, video and visual capabilities, while also becoming increasingly integrated into Google’s broader ecosystem.
Google has also been replacing its traditional Google Assistant experience with Gemini on Android devices, giving the AI assistant access to a large existing user base. This integration has strengthened Google’s ability to distribute its AI technology across smartphones and other consumer products.
The milestone places Gemini among a small group of Google products that have reached one billion users. Google’s broader portfolio includes products such as Search, Gmail, Android, Maps, Chrome and YouTube, giving the company an unusually large distribution network for artificial intelligence services.
The achievement also intensifies the rivalry between Google and OpenAI. Gemini’s one billion monthly users put it at a similar scale to ChatGPT, although the two companies use different reporting periods and user metrics for their products.
For Google, the rapid adoption of Gemini is particularly important because the company is investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure and models while integrating AI across its major businesses. Gemini is already being used to power AI features in Search and other Google services.
The company’s growing AI user base could also create new opportunities for advertising, subscriptions, cloud services and other revenue streams. However, Google faces increasing pressure to convert widespread AI usage into sustainable financial returns while maintaining the quality and reliability of its products.
The one billion user milestone nevertheless demonstrates how quickly generative AI has moved from an emerging technology to a mainstream consumer service. With Google continuing to integrate Gemini across its ecosystem, the company is positioning the assistant as a central part of how billions of people interact with its products.
