Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as the country’s new Defence Minister, according to a statement issued by the Presidency on Friday.

Adjei, who previously served as Ghana’s Minister for Works and Housing, takes over the defence portfolio as the government continues efforts to strengthen national security and modernise the country’s armed forces.

The Presidency did not immediately provide details on the reasons behind the cabinet reshuffle or indicate when Adjei will officially assume his new responsibilities.

The appointment comes as Ghana faces growing security concerns linked to instability in the wider West African region, including the threat of violent extremism spilling over from the Sahel.

Adjei is expected to oversee defence policy, military operations and initiatives aimed at enhancing border security and regional cooperation.
