A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Gao County in China’s southwestern Sichuan Province on Friday, killing one person and injuring six others, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
The China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC) said the quake occurred shortly after 1:00 p.m. local time (0500 GMT) at a shallow depth of 6 kilometres (4 miles).
CCTV reported that one person was killed after an exterior wall collapsed while the victim was attempting to seek safety during the earthquake. Six other people sustained minor injuries.
Local authorities launched emergency response operations to assess damage and assist affected residents. No major infrastructure damage was immediately reported.
Sichuan is one of China’s most seismically active regions and has experienced several destructive earthquakes in recent decades.
