Nigeria has reactivated 49 previously dormant oil wells as part of renewed efforts to increase crude oil production and achieve the Federal Government’s target of producing three million barrels of oil per day.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to revitalise upstream operations, improve production efficiency and maximise output from existing oil assets amid growing global energy demand.

Industry officials said the reactivated wells are expected to contribute additional volumes to the country’s daily crude oil production while supporting efforts to improve export earnings and strengthen government revenue.

The development follows sustained investments by operators in rehabilitating idle facilities, enhancing field operations and deploying new technologies to improve production from mature oil fields.

Stakeholders noted that increasing output from existing assets remains one of the fastest and most cost effective ways of boosting national production without waiting for new exploration projects to come on stream.

Analysts also attributed the renewed activity to improved security around oil producing communities, ongoing regulatory reforms and stronger collaboration between government agencies and industry operators aimed at curbing crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

The push to reach the three million barrels per day production target is expected to enhance Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings, improve fiscal revenues and strengthen the country’s position within the global oil market.

Energy experts, however, stressed that achieving the ambitious production goal will require sustained investment in upstream infrastructure, timely project approvals and continued efforts to address operational challenges affecting the petroleum industry.

They also called for greater investment in exploration, pipeline integrity, digital monitoring systems and community engagement to ensure that production gains are sustained over the long term.

Industry observers believe the reactivation of the 49 oil wells represents another step toward unlocking Nigeria’s full hydrocarbon potential while supporting economic growth, energy security and increased investor confidence in the country’s oil and gas sector.
