Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has signed into law legislation establishing the Kaduna State College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area, to address shortages of specialist nurses and strengthen healthcare delivery.

The state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, announced the development, describing the institution as part of the government’s efforts to develop skilled healthcare professionals and improve medical services.

The college is expected to provide advanced nursing education in several specialised fields, including midwifery, psychiatric and mental health nursing, paediatric nursing, perioperative nursing, emergency care, intensive care and public health nursing. It will also offer programmes in nursing education and administration.

Beyond professional training, the institution is expected to promote research, continuous professional development and collaboration with teaching hospitals, universities and other accredited institutions.

The legislation provides for a governing council to oversee the college’s strategic direction and an academic board to maintain standards in education, research and professional training. All programmes will be subject to applicable accreditation and regulatory requirements.

The establishment of the college comes amid wider efforts to strengthen Kaduna State’s healthcare system, including upgrading primary healthcare centres and rehabilitating general hospitals.

Expanding specialist nursing education could help address healthcare workforce shortages and improve access to skilled medical care, particularly in underserved communities. However, the institution’s long-term impact will depend on adequate funding, accreditation, staffing and effective implementation.
