Damaturu, Yobe State — Hundreds of families have been displaced following a devastating windstorm that swept through parts of Yobe State, destroying homes, businesses, and public infrastructure in one of the worst weather-related disasters to hit the state this year.
The windstorm, which struck Gashua in Bade Local Government Area, claimed three lives, injured several residents, and damaged hundreds of houses, leaving many families without shelter. Electricity poles, telecommunications masts, schools, and commercial buildings were also affected, disrupting essential services and economic activities across the community.
In response to the disaster, emergency management agencies carried out assessments of the affected areas, while the North East Development Commission (NEDC), in collaboration with the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), distributed relief materials to more than 2,000 victims to ease their hardship.
Residents have appealed for additional government and humanitarian assistance, saying many victims remain in urgent need of shelter, food, clothing, and rebuilding materials. Community leaders warned that the destruction has placed further pressure on vulnerable households already facing economic challenges.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to supporting affected communities through relief interventions and recovery efforts, while urging residents to remain vigilant during periods of severe weather.
The incident highlights the growing impact of extreme weather events on communities in northern Nigeria and underscores the need for improved disaster preparedness, resilient infrastructure, and timely humanitarian response to protect lives and livelihoods.
