Burnham Unveils Plan to Expand Vocational Education in England’s Secondary Schools

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans to allow secondary school pupils in England to study vocational subjects such as manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI) alongside core academic subjects, as part of reforms aimed at improving employment prospects for young people.

the new courses will be available from Year 10 and linked to local industries, giving students practical skills, work experience and clearer pathways into employment while continuing to study English, mathematics and science.

Burnham said the education system had focused too heavily on the university route, arguing that technical education should be valued equally. He said the reforms are intended to reduce the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), which recently reached its highest level in more than 12 years.

The government expects the first vocational pathways to begin operating in some parts of England by 2028, although few details have been released on how the programme will work in areas with limited industrial activity.

The proposals have received cautious support from education leaders, who welcomed the emphasis on technical learning but warned that schools would require additional funding, staff and facilities to implement the reforms successfully.

The changes will also see Ofsted expand inspections to include technical education as the government seeks to strengthen vocational learning across England.
