OPay has expanded its flagship scholarship programme to Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, reinforcing its commitment to supporting higher education and empowering students through long term financial assistance.

The partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding between OPay and the university, brings MAU into the fintech company’s ₦1.2 billion, 10 year scholarship initiative. The programme is designed to ease the financial burden on students, reward academic excellence and provide greater access to quality tertiary education.

Under the initiative, eligible students of Modibbo Adama University will benefit from annual scholarship awards aimed at helping them pursue their academic ambitions without the constraints of financial hardship. The programme forms part of OPay’s broader corporate social responsibility strategy, which focuses on youth empowerment, education and digital inclusion.

Speaking at the partnership event, representatives of OPay reaffirmed the company’s belief that investing in education is one of the most effective ways to build a prosperous future for Nigeria. They noted that the scholarship scheme is intended not only to support outstanding students financially but also to inspire innovation, leadership and academic excellence among young Nigerians.

Management of Modibbo Adama University welcomed the partnership, describing it as a timely intervention that will positively impact students and strengthen the institution’s drive towards academic excellence. The university expressed appreciation for OPay’s investment in education, noting that the initiative would help deserving students remain focused on their studies while preparing them for future careers.

The scholarship programme is expected to benefit hundreds of students over the next decade as OPay continues to expand the initiative across tertiary institutions nationwide. The company has consistently demonstrated its commitment to human capital development through strategic partnerships that promote learning, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Education stakeholders have described private sector investments in scholarships as a vital complement to government efforts in improving access to higher education, particularly at a time when many students are facing increasing educational expenses. Such initiatives are also expected to contribute to producing a highly skilled workforce capable of driving Nigeria’s digital economy and sustainable development.

With the inclusion of Modibbo Adama University, OPay continues to strengthen its role in supporting education and youth development, reaffirming its commitment to creating opportunities that enable students to reach their full potential while contributing meaningfully to national growth.
