The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, has launched an investigation into a suspected chemical spill along the Kaduna Abuja Expressway after a truck accident reportedly resulted in the formation of a white, foamy substance at the scene.
According to a statement by NESREA’s Assistant Director of Press, Nwamaka Ejiofor, a team from the Agency’s Kaduna State Field Office, led by the State Coordinator, Mr. Hena Dangari Emmanuel, visited the affected location as part of efforts to determine the nature of the substance and assess the possible environmental impact of the incident.

During the visit, the NESREA team engaged with the Police Commander for Jere, ACP Sani Zubairu, the Federal Road Safety Corps Commander responsible for the area and the community leader.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicated that a heavy duty truck was involved in an accident at the location, resulting in the spillage of its contents.
The Agency said it had commenced efforts to establish the nature of the spilled substance and determine whether it posed any risk to the environment or public health.
As part of the investigation, NESREA gathered information from relevant government officials, security personnel and residents familiar with the incident.
The Agency also collected samples of the white foamy substance, soil from the affected area and water from a nearby stream for laboratory analysis.

The laboratory tests are expected to help determine the chemical composition of the substance and provide scientific evidence to guide further action by the relevant authorities.
NESREA has strongly advised members of the public to avoid contact with the foamy substance, nearby water and surrounding soil until the investigation is concluded.
The Agency warned that avoiding contact with the affected materials was necessary to prevent possible exposure to hazardous substances, pending the outcome of the laboratory analysis.
NESREA said it would continue its investigation and take appropriate measures based on the findings from the ongoing assessment and laboratory tests.
