Farmers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed concern over the delay in the distribution of 6,800 bags of free fertiliser reportedly meant to support agricultural activities in the territory.
The farmers said the delay was affecting their preparations for the farming season, stressing that timely access to fertiliser was crucial to improving crop yields and reducing production costs.
According to the farmers, the fertiliser intervention was expected to provide much-needed support to smallholder farmers who are facing rising costs of agricultural inputs and other challenges associated with farming.
They appealed to relevant authorities to ensure the immediate distribution of the fertiliser to the intended beneficiaries, saying prolonged delays could undermine the purpose of the intervention.
The farmers also called for transparency in the distribution process to ensure that the fertiliser reaches genuine farmers across the various communities in the FCT.
They noted that many farmers depend on government interventions and agricultural support programmes to improve productivity and sustain their livelihoods.
The delay, they said, could have wider implications for food production, particularly at a time when stakeholders are seeking ways to increase local agricultural output and strengthen food security.
Agricultural stakeholders have similarly stressed the importance of making farm inputs available to farmers at the right time, noting that delays in the supply of fertiliser could affect planting schedules and ultimately reduce productivity.
The farmers urged the FCT authorities and other relevant agencies to address the situation and provide clear information on when the 6,800 bags of fertiliser would be distributed.
They further called for better coordination among agencies responsible for agricultural interventions to prevent delays and ensure that government support reaches farmers when it is most needed.
The farmers expressed hope that the issue would be resolved promptly, allowing them to access the fertiliser and proceed with their farming activities without further setbacks.
