SpaceX is investigating the technical issue that forced the company to abort the latest launch of its Starship rocket just moments before liftoff, delaying what was expected to be another major test of the world’s most powerful launch system.
The launch was called off during the final countdown after engineers detected an anomaly during preflight checks. SpaceX founder and Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said the issue was identified before ignition, allowing the launch team to safely halt the mission without damage to the rocket or launch infrastructure.
The company has not disclosed the exact nature of the technical problem but said engineers are conducting a detailed review of the launch systems and onboard hardware to determine what triggered the automatic abort. Musk indicated that if inspections proceed as planned, another launch attempt could take place within the coming days.
The Starship system, consisting of the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage, is central to SpaceX’s ambitions for missions to the Moon and Mars. The rocket is also expected to play a key role in NASA’s Artemis programme, which aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface later this decade.
SpaceX has adopted a rapid testing strategy, using each flight and launch rehearsal to improve the rocket’s design and reliability. Aviation experts note that launch delays and countdown aborts are common during the development of complex spacecraft and are often viewed as precautionary measures to ensure safety.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to monitor the investigation in line with regulatory requirements before the company proceeds with another launch attempt.
The delayed mission comes as competition in the global space industry continues to intensify, with governments and private companies investing heavily in next generation launch vehicles for commercial, scientific and deep space exploration.
