The Canadian province of Ontario has requested federal assistance as rapidly spreading wildfires continue to force evacuations from remote communities, while smoke from the fires blankets large parts of Canada and drifts into the United States.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the province had asked the federal government to provide additional military aircraft and emergency resources to help evacuate residents from isolated First Nations communities threatened by advancing wildfires.

Officials said thousands of people have already been displaced as firefighters battle hundreds of active blazes across northern Ontario. Many of the fires remain out of control due to persistent hot, dry and windy conditions that have accelerated their spread.

The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) said crews from across Canada, supported by international firefighters, continue to work to contain the fires and protect homes and critical infrastructure. Emergency shelters have been established for evacuees, while authorities are coordinating transportation to safer locations.

Smoke from the wildfires has significantly reduced air quality across several Canadian provinces and parts of the northeastern United States, prompting health advisories. Officials urged residents, particularly children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions, to remain indoors where possible and avoid prolonged outdoor activity.

Scientists have linked the increasing frequency and intensity of Canada’s wildfire seasons to climate change, with rising temperatures, prolonged droughts and dry vegetation creating conditions that allow fires to spread more rapidly.

Authorities warned that weather conditions could remain challenging in the coming days and urged residents in affected areas to stay alert, follow evacuation orders and monitor official emergency updates.
