The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a 10-year-old boy, identified as Chinecherem Onuwasoanya, after he reportedly lost his way home while playing in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
The boy was rescued on Sunday afternoon, November 1, 2026, by operatives attached to the Okpoko Police Division after a concerned resident found him wandering around the community without any family member.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, explaining that the resident immediately took the child to the police station for assistance.
According to Ikenga, preliminary interaction with the boy revealed that he had left home to play but subsequently became unable to find his way back or locate his family members.
The police spokesperson added that the child identified himself as a resident of Ebenebe, Anambra State.
He said the command had commenced efforts to establish contact with the boy’s parents or guardians to facilitate his safe reunion with his family.
The police described the intervention of the concerned resident as timely, noting that the decision to take the child to the nearest police station helped ensure his safety.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, commended the Good Samaritan for demonstrating concern and responsibility towards the welfare of a vulnerable child.
Ama urged residents to remain vigilant and supportive of security efforts aimed at protecting children and other vulnerable members of society.
He also advised parents and guardians to ensure adequate supervision of their children, particularly when they leave home to play or participate in other outdoor activities.
The police commissioner stressed the importance of making children easily identifiable and traceable in situations where they become separated from their families.
He encouraged parents to ensure their children know basic family information and have reliable contact details that can assist security agencies or members of the public in locating their guardians during emergencies.
The command further appealed to residents who might have useful information about the boy’s family to assist in identifying and locating his parents or guardians.
Anyone with relevant information has been urged to contact the Okpoko Police Division or the Anambra State Police Command.
The police said efforts were ongoing to establish the child’s family background and ensure that he was safely reunited with his relatives.
The development has also highlighted the importance of community cooperation in protecting children, particularly those who may become separated from their families in public places.
In another development, the Lagos State Police Command recently rescued three young girls suspected to be victims of human trafficking during a routine patrol along Owode Apa Road in Badagry.
