The NEPAD Business Group Nigeria (NBGN) has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to strengthen private-sector development as part of efforts to improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy, create jobs and attract investment.
NBGN Chairman Bashorun J. K. Randle made the call in a statement on Tuesday, while paying tribute to the late Bamanga Tukur for his contributions to private-sector development and economic integration in Nigeria.
Randle said the private sector had a central role to play in driving economic growth and urged policymakers to sustain policies that support business development and wealth creation.
He called on Tinubu to promote the establishment of private-sector development organisations and ensure that the government’s economic reforms translate into employment opportunities, increased investment and sustainable development.
According to Randle, Nigeria’s ambition to compete internationally requires consistent government support for private enterprise, rather than treating private-sector development as an occasional policy priority.
He also urged the president to build on Tukur’s legacy of promoting economic integration and private-sector participation, describing the late business leader’s contributions as an example of service and commitment to national development.
The call comes as Nigeria continues to implement economic reforms aimed at improving investment conditions, expanding productive activity and strengthening public finances.
A stronger private sector could help diversify the economy, reduce dependence on government spending and create more employment opportunities. However, achieving these outcomes will depend on effective policies, access to finance, reliable infrastructure and a business environment that enables companies to grow.
