Inter Lagos have parted ways with head coach Shakiru Giwa following the club’s disappointing start to life in the Nigeria Premier Football League, with the newly promoted side still without a victory after eight matches.
The club confirmed Giwa’s departure on Tuesday through a statement published on its official X account, expressing appreciation for his contribution, particularly his role in securing promotion from the Nigeria National League to the NPFL.
“Coach Giwa has been an important part of the club’s journey, most notably leading Inter Lagos FC to promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL),” the club stated.
Inter Lagos described the achievement as a significant milestone in their history, adding that the coach’s dedication and commitment would remain an important part of the club’s development.
The club also wished Giwa success in his future coaching career as both parties begin a new chapter.
His departure comes amid mounting pressure on Inter Lagos, who have struggled to adapt to the demands of top-flight football since earning promotion.
The Lagos-based side have collected just two points from their opening eight matches, leaving them bottom of the league table and searching for a turnaround.
Their failure to secure a win has raised concerns about their ability to compete in the division, with the coaching change representing a fresh attempt to revive their campaign.
Inter Lagos will now look to regroup and find a way to improve their results as they fight to establish themselves in Nigeria’s top football division.
The club has yet to announce a replacement for Giwa.
