The Nigeria Olympic Committee Women Commission will bring together more than 100 adolescent girls from secondary schools across Lagos State on Saturday, October 10, as part of activities marking the International Day of the Girl Child.
The event, scheduled to take place at the OlympAfrica Centre in Amuwo-Odofin, will be held under the theme, “Her Voice, Her Future: Investing in Girls Through Sports and Education.”
The programme will feature schoolgirls, young female athletes, coaches and stakeholders from the sports, education and advocacy sectors.
Activities will include presentations by women leaders in education, sports and digital technology, mentorship sessions, sporting activities and the launch of the “Her Voice” pledge.
NOC President Habu Gumel said the initiative is designed to promote the rights of girls while using sports and education to build confidence, leadership skills and opportunities for personal development.
“We believe that when you invest in a girl’s education and empower her through sports, you are not just educating one girl – you are giving her a voice to shape her own future,” Gumel said.
He added that the programme seeks to encourage alternatives to child marriage by creating opportunities for girls to learn, lead and thrive.
The Lagos event is part of the Commission’s 2026 annual programme, which will also feature a Women in Sports Leadership Training/Seminar for journalists in Abuja from October 22 to 24.
Organisers said the initiative will promote school retention through sports, encourage digital skills and challenge negative stereotypes surrounding the girl child.
