Fighting has intensified in Yemen as forces loyal to the internationally recognised government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, reported fresh territorial gains near the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Yemeni officials said government forces retook the towns of Dhubab, Bab and Hadeid during a major offensive launched along the country’s western coast. The advance came after Houthi fighters had captured several areas in recent weeks, including the strategic port city of Mocha.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden, is one of the world’s major maritime routes and is vital to international trade.
The offensive, known as “Yemen Dawn”, is being supported by Saudi air power. Government forces have also reported advances in southern Taiz, where fighting has been particularly intense.
The Houthis, meanwhile, have claimed attacks on Saudi airports, oil infrastructure and military installations using missiles and drones. The claims could not immediately be independently verified.
The renewed escalation marks a major deterioration after a four-year ceasefire and has raised concerns about the security of shipping through the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb.
