The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have agreed to work together to improve electricity supply across the Lagos corridor under the 24/7 Energy Zones pilot programme.
The agreement was reached on October 5 during a technical meeting between Power Minister Joseph Tegbe and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Lagos House, Marina.
Lagos is the first of three areas selected for the pilot, alongside the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors. The programme is designed to improve the amount of electricity that can be delivered to major commercial and industrial centres.
Tegbe said the ministry had secured commitments from electricity distribution companies to increase power offtake and provide more reliable supply to customers along the Lagos corridor. The federal government will also work with Lagos on grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion and regulatory coordination.
A joint technical committee will identify outstanding problems and recommend measures needed to implement the programme. The committee will report to a steering committee led by Sanwo-Olu and co-chaired by Tegbe.
For businesses and manufacturers in Lagos, more reliable electricity could reduce dependence on private power generation and lower one of the major operating costs facing the state’s productive sector.
