Former Senator Abiodun Olujimi has urged Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government’s economic reforms, saying the policies are beginning to stabilise the economy and could eventually deliver stronger prosperity.
Olujimi, who represented Ekiti South in the Senate from 2015 to 2023, said the reforms, including the unification of the foreign exchange market and removal of petrol subsidy, were necessary to address longstanding weaknesses in the economy.
She argued that the foreign exchange reforms had reduced opportunities for dollar round-tripping and increased reliance on the naira for domestic business transactions.
Olujimi acknowledged that the reforms had imposed significant pressure on households, particularly through higher petrol prices. She nevertheless urged Nigerians to allow the policies more time, arguing that the current difficulties could give way to improved economic conditions.
Her comments come a day after President Bola Tinubu used his Independence Day address to say Nigeria was moving from a period of economic reform towards prosperity. The President cited stronger economic growth and falling inflation as signs of improvement.
Olujimi said the government should remain focused on implementing the reforms while Nigerians continue to demand accountability for their impact on livelihoods and businesses.
