South Africa has summoned the United States ambassador for the third time in nine months over what its foreign affairs department described as “undiplomatic conduct,” further highlighting tensions between Pretoria and Washington.
A senior official said Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III was formally summoned in a diplomatic protest, known as a demarche. South African authorities did not provide specific details about the conduct that prompted the latest action.
The latest dispute comes amid strained relations between the two countries over several issues, including US criticism of South Africa’s domestic policies and Washington’s concerns about racial discrimination. Pretoria has rejected those claims and maintained that its policies are intended to address inequalities inherited from apartheid.
Bozell, who arrived in South Africa in February, was previously summoned over remarks that Pretoria said undermined the country’s judiciary and its historical context. The ambassador has also indicated that Washington could take further measures if South Africa does not address US concerns.
The United States recently imposed visa restrictions on some South Africans, adding to the diplomatic friction.
Despite the disagreements, South Africa’s foreign affairs department said both governments remain engaged in discussions aimed at resolving outstanding bilateral issues. Pretoria has also stressed that future engagement should respect the country’s sovereignty.
