Mike Makinde made history at the 29th Nigeria Cup golf tournament after becoming the first player to win the prestigious title three times.
The seven-handicap golfer produced an impressive performance at the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938, finishing with a net score of 65 to claim the championship by four shots.
Anscy Okoebor finished second, while Abiola Johnson completed the top three.
Makinde first lifted the Nigeria Cup in 2022 before successfully defending his title in 2023. He lost the crown to Tayo Babalakin in 2024 and Paul Tijani in 2025 but returned to the top this year to create a new record in the competition.
Reflecting on his historic achievement, Makinde praised the organising committee and said his victory was the result of hard work and determination.
“I consider winning again as an important part of my golfing career. I’m excited and happy with the outcome of this tournament,” he said.
Makinde also expressed confidence that the latest triumph could lead to more success in the years ahead.
In the men’s gross category, Akeem Lawal emerged champion with a score of 75, finishing ahead of Calli Udalor, who returned 76. Peter Eben-Spiff took third place.
Adeyosola Ayodele won the ladies’ net category with a score of 71, while Evelyn Oyome claimed the ladies’ gross title.
Chairman of the 2026 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, Mohammed Oybo, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the week-long tournament.
Oybo thanked the sponsors, committee members and participating golfers for their contributions towards the successful staging of the competition.
He said the organising committee was determined to raise the standard of the tournament and provide participants with a memorable week of competitive golf.
The Nigeria Cup is an annual golf tournament organised to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence anniversary and has become an important fixture on the country’s golfing calendar.
Makinde’s record-breaking triumph has now added another significant chapter to the tournament’s history.
