Dangote Projects Limited, the construction arm of Dangote Industries Limited, has expanded its construction equipment fleet to nearly 7,000 machines, with the company describing the collection as the largest construction equipment fleet in the world.
The development followed the acquisition of more than 4,000 additional machines as Dangote expanded its refinery and fertiliser projects. The company initially purchased 2,563 pieces of equipment, including 320 cranes, for the construction of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos.
Group Vice President, Edwin Devakumar, said the decision to build the company’s own construction capacity was driven partly by the limited availability of equipment and contractors capable of handling projects on the scale required.
Dangote subsequently invested in supporting infrastructure, including a quarry with a capacity of 10 million tonnes annually, concrete production facilities and a dedicated port capable of handling exceptionally heavy equipment.
The company also developed accommodation facilities for up to 50,000 workers during the refinery project, which at its peak employed about 63,000 people.
The expanded fleet is expected to support Dangote’s ongoing industrial projects, including the planned $16 billion refinery in Lamu, Kenya, whose construction commenced on Wednesday.
Dangote is also targeting an increase in the Lagos refinery’s capacity from about 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, alongside wider investments across Africa.
