Nigeria’s 36 states are set for the unveiling of the third edition of the Subnational Climate Governance Performance Rating and Ranking (SCGPRR 3.0) on October 8 in Abuja.
The ranking is being organised by the Department of Climate Change under the Federal Ministry of Environment in partnership with the Society for Planet and Prosperity. Representatives of the states, including commissioners for environment, directors of climate change and climate desk officers, are expected at the event.
The assessment was introduced in 2024 to provide a common framework for measuring climate governance across Nigeria’s states. It examines the development of institutions, policies and systems for responding to climate change, while identifying gaps and encouraging greater accountability.
The third edition will use an enhanced assessment framework with stronger emphasis on the implementation of climate projects, building on the comparative analysis developed in the previous edition.
The second edition, released in February 2026, assessed all 36 states and examined areas including institutional arrangements, climate-project implementation, monitoring, online visibility and climate financing.
The October ranking is expected to provide an updated assessment of states’ progress and stimulate discussions on strengthening climate institutions, improving project implementation and translating climate commitments into practical action.
