Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is seeking another term in office as he prepares for a closely contested presidential election on October 4, with social inequality and the country’s political direction at the centre of the campaign.
Lula, who returned to power in 2023 after defeating Jair Bolsonaro, is now seeking a fourth presidential term. His longtime friend and theologian Frei Betto says Lula’s commitment to social issues is rooted in his childhood experience of poverty and hunger.
The election will pit Lula against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The contest comes amid debate over crime, social welfare, democracy and the future direction of Brazil.
Lula’s government has recently expanded welfare measures and introduced initiatives targeting household debt and online gambling, while his campaign has emphasised social protection and economic inclusion. Critics have questioned the timing of some measures because of their proximity to the election.
Brazil’s electoral authority has confirmed that the first round will take place on October 4, with a second round scheduled for October 25 if required.
