Mastercard has highlighted the importance of building a more connected, inclusive and trusted digital economy across Africa at GITEX Nigeria 2026.
The technology and payments company participated in discussions focused on digital government, financial innovation, cybersecurity, interoperability and the development of local technology capabilities. The event was held across Abuja and Lagos from August 31 to September 3, 2026.
Mastercard executives stressed the need to move beyond digital adoption towards greater participation and value creation. The company said Africa’s growing investments in digital identity, real time payments and digital government platforms create an opportunity to connect these systems so they can operate together rather than as isolated services.
Mastercard also hosted stakeholders at its exhibition booth, including the Lagos State Deputy Governor and the United States Consul General, highlighting the role of public and private sector collaboration in advancing digital transformation.
At the event, Mastercard also held a masterclass focused on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, fraud prevention and digital transformation. The session included discussions on cyber threats, AI powered fraud prevention and strategies for strengthening digital resilience.
The company said stronger digital connections, improved cybersecurity and collaboration among governments, financial institutions, fintechs and technology companies would be important to Africa’s continued digital development.
