US President Donald Trump has described his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping as a “truly great friendship” as the two leaders met at the White House on Thursday.
Trump made the remarks while welcoming Xi during a formal state visit, saying their relationship was built on mutual respect and the interests of their respective peoples.
“President Xi and I have forged a friendship, a truly great friendship, actually,” Trump said, highlighting the personal relationship he has developed with the Chinese leader.
The meeting comes as Washington and Beijing continue to manage disagreements over trade, technology, Taiwan and other geopolitical issues. Both countries have also been working to maintain a broader trade truce and avoid a renewed escalation in tariffs.
Trump said artificial intelligence and security would also feature in discussions, particularly the development of increasingly advanced AI systems.
Xi, meanwhile, said China and the United States should work toward a stable relationship based on cooperation, manageable competition and peaceful coexistence.
The visit is Xi’s first trip to Washington in more than a decade and includes extensive ceremonial events and high-level talks between the two governments.
