Former England captain Wayne Rooney has dismissed speculation that he used weight-loss injections to achieve his slimmer appearance, insisting he has been working hard through exercise to lose weight.
The 40-year-old former Manchester United striker addressed the claims while speaking about his new Disney+ documentary series, The Real Rooneys, which follows his life with wife Coleen and their four sons.
Rooney laughed off suggestions that medication was responsible for his recent weight loss, saying he had been putting in considerable effort to improve his fitness.
“It’s a shame, because I’m working really hard to lose weight,” Rooney said in an interview with the Daily Mail.
The former footballer also opened up about a nose operation he underwent, explaining that the procedure was motivated by breathing difficulties rather than cosmetic reasons.
Rooney revealed that he had broken his nose twice during his playing career and eventually reached a point where he struggled to breathe properly through one side.
“I couldn’t blow one side out of my nose and so I had it fixed,” he said.
His wife, Coleen, disclosed that she had encouraged Rooney to undergo the procedure, partly because his snoring had become an issue.
“I tried to get him to do it because of his snoring,” she said.
Rooney first suffered a broken nose during Manchester United’s FA Cup meeting with Preston North End in 2015. He sustained another fracture several years later while playing for DC United against Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer.
Despite the recurring problem, Rooney said he delayed surgery for years before eventually deciding to have the procedure following the 2026 World Cup.
He later revealed on his Stick to United podcast that he was recovering from the operation, with plastic tubes placed inside his nose to assist the healing process.
Rooney’s latest comments come as he and Coleen launch The Real Rooneys, a 10-part Disney+ documentary offering an intimate look at their family life and careers.
The series features the couple and their four sons — Kai, 16, Klay, 13, Kit, 10, and Cass, eight — while also documenting a period of transition for Rooney as he moves away from football management and expands his work in the media. The documentary premiered on Disney+ on Thursday.
