George Ilenikhena says receiving his first senior invitation to the Super Eagles is a proud moment after his impressive start to life with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.
The 20-year-old Lagos-born striker was included in Eric Chelle’s 24-man squad for Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Ilenikhena’s call-up follows a promising start to his career at Al-Ittihad, having previously played for Amiens, Royal Antwerp and Monaco before moving to Saudi Arabia.
For the young forward, however, the invitation represents more than recognition for his club performances. It is an opportunity to represent the country where he was born.
“It is an honour, and I am very proud to wear the shirt because I was born here. It’s a big thing to represent the country,” Ilenikhena said.
The striker revealed that his parents were among the first people he contacted after receiving the news of his invitation to the national team.
“When I had my first call-up, I called my mom and my dad,” he said.
Ilenikhena is now eager to make the most of his opportunity with the three-time African champions and demonstrate his abilities to Nigerian supporters.
“To be honest, I’m very happy, really excited to be here and represent Nigeria and show the fans my quality,” he added.
Although he is yet to make his senior international debut, the youngster is determined to make a strong impression whenever he is given the opportunity by Chelle.
“I will give my best and show everybody that I am ready to play,” Ilenikhena declared.
The Al-Ittihad forward has also set his ambitions beyond simply earning his first cap, revealing that he wants to help Nigeria compete for major honours.
“My personal goal is to win all the tournaments we, the Super Eagles, play in,” he said.
With the Super Eagles beginning their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo, Ilenikhena will hope his first senior international experience marks the beginning of a long and successful chapter with Nigeria.
