Super Eagles striker Akor Adams says Nigeria’s ambition of becoming the best team in Africa must begin with a strong start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Adams spoke in an interview with Pooja Media ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming qualifying fixtures, stressing that the opening matches would establish the foundation for the team’s broader ambitions.
“It’s very important because I think it sets the mark for what we want to do. If we want to be the best team in Africa, it starts from the qualification, like the coach has clearly said. And that is what we aim to achieve as well,” Adams said.
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle recently named his squad for the AFCON qualifiers and an international friendly against Russia, with several players receiving their first invitations to the senior national team.
Adams welcomed the new faces, saying increased competition for places could strengthen the squad and raise the team’s overall level.
“It’s always good to see that we have players who are also doing well, and who can get the chance to be in the team. Whatever makes us better, that’s the goal,” he said.
The striker added that Chelle had made it clear that players who merit an opportunity would be welcomed into the group.
Adams, who has returned to the Super Eagles squad for the latest international window, described his comeback as a privilege and expressed his happiness at reuniting with his teammates.
“It feels good, feels good. It’s also a privilege to be back with the group, and yeah, we’re happy to be back,” he said.
The forward also called on Nigerian supporters to remain optimistic and continue backing the team throughout the qualifying campaign.
“Be optimistic, come out in good support and in good faith in the team, because we know you guys support us. And we’ll try to give our best on the pitch,” Adams added.
The Super Eagles are now preparing to begin their quest for a place at the 2027 AFCON, with Chelle expected to use the qualifiers to build a competitive squad while targeting positive results from the opening fixtures.
