Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek is expected to brief the United Nations Security Council this week on the risks posed by rapidly advancing AI systems, as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly.

The 15-member Security Council is scheduled to discuss artificial intelligence and international security on Wednesday. The meeting comes amid growing concerns among technology leaders about increasingly powerful AI systems potentially developing capabilities that could become difficult for humans to control.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman is also expected to brief the meeting, while senior representatives from Anthropic are expected to participate. DeepSeek and another Chinese AI company, Moonshot, have been invited to make statements, although DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng is not expected to attend.

The UN Security Council first discussed AI-related security risks in 2023. Since then, disagreements have emerged over how governments should regulate the technology and whether development should be slowed.

The United States has urged greater caution over potential AI risks, while Chinese state media have criticised calls for a slowdown, arguing that they could be aimed at limiting China’s technological progress.

The discussions come as Washington and Beijing prepare further talks on AI safety, adding another dimension to their broader technology rivalry.
