U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are being urged to cooperate on artificial intelligence as the technology develops at an unprecedented pace.
Writing in The Guardian, former Australian Chief Scientist Alan Finkel argued that competition between the United States and China over AI could create serious risks if governments fail to establish effective safeguards. He called for the two countries to work together on an international agreement to regulate the AI industry.
Finkel compared the situation to the nuclear arms race, saying the United States and China, as leading AI powers, have a particular responsibility to address potential dangers.
Recent U.S.-China discussions have already included AI safety, incident reporting and crisis communication, although strategic mistrust and technology restrictions remain obstacles to broader cooperation.
