French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have pledged to strengthen cooperation between France and Canada amid growing tensions with the United States.
The two leaders met on Sunday in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a French territory off Canada’s Atlantic coast, where they discussed closer cooperation in defence, energy, space, climate and trade.
Carney said Canada and France needed stronger ties as both countries face geopolitical challenges and concerns over sovereignty. Macron also reaffirmed their shared commitment to democracy, international law, free trade and strategic autonomy.
The meeting comes as Canada seeks stronger relations with the European Union amid strained trade relations with the US. Macron also expressed support for a proposal that could make Canada the EU’s first associate member.
The leaders further discussed expanding Canadian liquefied natural gas exports to Europe and developing joint projects in strategic sectors.
