Gunmen have killed and beheaded the village head of Lafagu community in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, with the police confirming that some suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The attack reportedly occurred on Sunday, with the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, confirming the killing in a message.

Usman said the village head was killed in Lafagu but did not disclose the identity of the deceased traditional ruler. He added that further details would be released as investigations progress.

“Yes, it is true the village head was killed in Lafagu under Bagudo Local Government. We have made some arrests in respect of the incident and will provide details later,” the police spokesperson said.

There are differing accounts over the identity of the attackers. While the police have not publicly attributed the killing to a particular group, local sources said it was unclear whether the perpetrators were bandits, Lakurawa fighters or members of an armed ethnic militia.

The incident has heightened tension in Lafagu and neighbouring communities, where concerns have been raised over worsening insecurity and the possibility of further violence.

Police investigations are ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
