The Presidency has confirmed that President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York.

Tinubu has instead mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the high-level meeting, which runs from September 22 to 28, 2026.

Shettima will lead a delegation comprising Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers and other senior government officials.

The Vice President is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in high-level meetings on issues including development, climate action, international cooperation and reform of the global financial system.

The development confirms earlier reports that Tinubu would not travel to New York for this year’s UNGA. The Presidency did not give a reason for his absence in the statement announcing Shettima’s representation.

Shettima also represented Tinubu at the 79th UNGA in 2024 and the 80th UNGA in 2025.
