U.S. President Donald Trump campaigned in North Carolina on Wednesday for Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley, attacking Democrats over crime, immigration and communism as he seeks to strengthen his party ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
Trump urged supporters to back Whatley, a former Republican National Committee chairman, who is running against former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.
Trump accused Democrats of supporting communist policies and criticized Cooper over a 2021 COVID era settlement that reduced North Carolina’s prison population. Cooper and Democrats have rejected such characterizations.
The campaign comes as Republicans face concerns over the economy and affordability. A recent Elon University poll showed Cooper leading Whatley 49% to 38% among likely voters, while unaffiliated voters make up about 40% of North Carolina’s registered electorate.
Trump has promised more campaign appearances across the country as Republicans seek to retain control of Congress in the November elections.
