Good skincare goes beyond applying several creams and beauty products, as maintaining healthy skin requires a broader approach that includes proper hygiene, a balanced lifestyle and understanding individual skin needs, Debbie Okokon has advised.

Okokon stressed that using numerous skincare products does not necessarily guarantee healthy or attractive skin. She noted that excessive use of products, particularly without understanding their ingredients or suitability, could instead create problems for the skin.

According to her, a good skincare routine should begin with basic practices such as keeping the skin clean, staying adequately hydrated and protecting it from excessive exposure to sunlight.

She also emphasised the importance of paying attention to the body’s overall wellbeing, noting that factors such as diet, sleep and stress can affect the condition and appearance of the skin.

Okokon advised people to avoid the temptation to copy skincare routines simply because they appear effective on other people. Skin types differ, and products that work well for one person may cause irritation or other reactions in another.

She encouraged individuals to understand whether their skin is oily, dry, sensitive or a combination of different types before selecting products.

The skincare advocate further cautioned against frequently changing products or combining several active ingredients without proper knowledge. Such practices, she said, can damage the skin barrier and make existing skin concerns worse.

She recommended maintaining a simple and consistent routine built around suitable cleansing, moisturising and sun protection, while seeking professional advice when persistent skin problems occur.

Okokon said the goal of skincare should not be the number of products used but the health and condition of the skin.

She added that consistency, proper lifestyle habits and informed product choices are more important than having a large collection of creams.
