Russia and North Korea have opened their first road bridge across the Tumen River, creating a new direct land connection between the two countries as their political, economic and military relationship continues to deepen.

The bridge, which links Khasan in Russia’s Far East with Tumangang in North Korea, was officially inaugurated on Monday, September 7. The opening marks the first time the two countries have had a dedicated road crossing, adding a new transport route alongside the railway connection that has existed between them for decades.

The new crossing stretches for about one kilometre and is located close to the existing Korea Russia Friendship Bridge, which has connected the two countries by rail since 1959. The older bridge remains an important link for rail traffic, while the new structure is expected to make the movement of vehicles and goods considerably easier.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and his North Korean counterpart, Pak Thae Song, took part in the opening ceremony remotely. Mishustin described the project as an important step that could strengthen trade and wider cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, including economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges.

The bridge project was agreed after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea in 2024, when the two governments moved to expand their strategic partnership. Construction began in 2025 after years of discussions, with the project originally expected to open earlier this year before delays pushed the inauguration into September.

For Russia, the bridge offers a new route into North Korea and could provide an additional channel for commercial activity in the Russian Far East. North Korea, meanwhile, gains another transport connection with one of its most important international partners at a time when Pyongyang has faced extensive international sanctions and increasing isolation from much of the global economy.

The timing of the opening is also significant because relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have strengthened sharply since Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. North Korea has provided military support to Russia, including troops deployed to Russia’s Kursk region, while Moscow has deepened political and military cooperation with Pyongyang.

The new road link has consequently attracted attention beyond its potential economic benefits. Analysts and Ukrainian officials have raised concerns that improved road connectivity could eventually make it easier for military equipment, personnel or other supplies to move between the two countries.

Russian and North Korean officials have publicly emphasised the civilian and economic purposes of the project, pointing to trade, tourism and greater movement of people as its principal objectives. The bridge is also expected to support closer cooperation between border regions and reduce some of the logistical difficulties associated with moving goods between the two countries.

The opening comes as Moscow continues to strengthen relationships with countries willing to cooperate with it despite Western sanctions. North Korea, for its part, has increasingly relied on closer ties with Russia and China as it seeks to expand its economic and diplomatic options.

The new bridge therefore represents more than an infrastructure project. It provides a physical symbol of the rapidly changing relationship between Russia and North Korea and gives the two governments another route through which their growing partnership can develop.
