Nigeria’s leading fencer, Inkosi Brou, has continued his impressive rise on the international stage after winning the 2026 FIE Satellite Sabre Viking Cup in Iceland.

The 18-year-old produced a composed and dominant display throughout the one-day competition to claim the title and secure his third international medal for Nigeria.

Brou turned his attention to the Viking Cup after missing last month’s Commonwealth Championships in Lagos, and he made the most of his opportunity by overcoming a strong international field featuring competitors from Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, the Netherlands, Ecuador, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Jamaica, Hong Kong, Australia, Great Britain and hosts Iceland.

Entering the competition as the highest-ranked fencer in the field, Brou began his campaign in the round of 16 against UAE’s Hamid Al Maazmi.

He wasted little time asserting his authority, powering to a convincing 15-4 victory to book his place in the quarter-finals.

The Nigerian then faced Sweden’s Kenneth Kong in a much tighter contest but maintained his composure to secure a 15-11 victory and advance to the last four.

Brou’s experience once again proved decisive in the semi-final, where he defeated Czech Republic’s No. 4 seed Lumir Kral 15-12 to earn his place in the championship bout.

With the home crowd behind Iceland’s Andri Maateev in the final, Brou delivered arguably his most impressive performance of the tournament.

The Nigerian dominated the contest from start to finish, producing a commanding 15-6 victory over Maateev to lift the Viking Cup trophy.

The triumph further underlines Brou’s growing status in international fencing and strengthens his ambition of making history for Nigeria at the Olympic Games.

Already the country’s highest-ranked fencer, Brou trains at the Scarsdale Fencing Center and the Peter Westbrook Foundation in the United States, where he continues to develop his skills with the long-term goal of qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Brou, who is the grandson of the late former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Dora Akunyili, has already made his mark in Nigerian fencing.

In 2024, he won Nigeria’s first-ever global fencing medal when he claimed silver at the World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Reykjavik.

A year later, he added a bronze medal at the African Junior Championships in Angola.

His latest triumph in Iceland represents another significant step in his development and offers fresh hope that Nigeria could soon have its first Olympic fencer.
