Sunderland have completed the signing of highly rated Ecuadorian striker Juan Riquelme Angulo Caicedo from Independiente del Valle on a long term contract.
The 18 year old forward joins the Premier League club after attracting significant interest from several major European clubs, with Sunderland moving decisively to secure his services before the close of the summer transfer window.
Angulo arrives at the Stadium of Light after an impressive breakthrough campaign with Independiente del Valle. Standing at around 6ft 4in, the young striker has been praised for his physical strength, aerial ability and goal scoring instincts.
He scored six goals and provided three assists in 15 league appearances during his debut campaign, with seven of those matches coming as starts. His performances helped establish him as one of the emerging attacking talents in Ecuador.
Sunderland’s move for Angulo reflects the club’s continued focus on recruiting young players with significant long term potential. The Ecuadorian joins a squad that already includes experienced attacking options, giving the teenager an opportunity to develop while adapting to English football.
Sunderland’s director of football Florent Ghisolfi revealed that the club faced competition from several major European sides for Angulo’s signature, underlining the level of expectation surrounding the teenager.
The forward developed through Independiente del Valle’s youth system, one of Ecuador’s leading academies, before making his senior breakthrough. His move to England now represents the biggest step of his young career.
Angulo is also set to share the Sunderland dressing room with fellow Ecuadorian Nilson Angulo, adding another connection to his home country as he begins his Premier League journey.
The Black Cats believe the teenager has the potential to develop into an important first team player, although he is expected to face competition for regular playing time as he adjusts to the demands and intensity of English football.
The completion of the deal makes Angulo one of the latest Ecuadorian talents to make the move to the Premier League and strengthens Sunderland’s attacking options as they continue their return to England’s top flight.
