Chelsea’s deadline day move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has collapsed after the French club withdrew from a full written agreement reached with the Premier League side.
Chelsea had reached an agreement worth around £47 million to sign the Senegal international, with Camara set to sign a six year contract after completing his medical. However, Monaco dramatically reversed its decision shortly after the transfer deadline, leaving Chelsea without the midfielder they had identified as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez.
The agreement between the two clubs had reportedly been completed in writing, with Chelsea believing all major aspects of the transfer had been settled. The Blues were therefore left furious when Monaco informed them that they would no longer proceed with the sale.
The sudden collapse came after Monaco made progress in negotiations over the potential sale of striker Folarin Balogun to Everton. The French club had initially been prepared to allow Camara to leave, but its position changed after developments surrounding Balogun’s proposed transfer.
Chelsea had moved for Camara after agreeing to sell Fernandez to Manchester City for £125 million. The Argentine midfielder completed his move to City, leaving Chelsea needing a replacement before the transfer window closed.
Camara had emerged as the club’s preferred option, with Chelsea stepping up their pursuit on deadline day. An earlier bid of £38.5 million had been rejected before the London club returned with an improved offer that Monaco accepted.
The 22 year old Senegalese midfielder had also agreed personal terms with Chelsea and was expected to travel to London to complete the final stages of the transfer.
However, Monaco’s decision to withdraw from the agreement meant Chelsea could not complete the signing before the window closed. The situation has left the Blues without a direct replacement for Fernandez despite having successfully negotiated a deal for Camara.
Chelsea are understood to be deeply unhappy with the way the situation unfolded, particularly because they believed the club to club agreement had already been completed.
Camara, who joined Monaco from Metz in 2024, remains a Monaco player following the failed transfer. The Senegal international had attracted interest from several clubs during the summer and was regarded by Chelsea as a midfielder capable of providing energy, defensive work and technical quality.
The failed move represents one of the biggest twists of the summer transfer window, with Chelsea completing Fernandez’s departure to Manchester City but ultimately being unable to secure the replacement they had agreed to bring in.
