A Sokoto State governorship aspirant has expressed support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s proposal on strengthening Nigeria’s border security and management.

The aspirant said Atiku’s position on the country’s borders was timely, stressing that effective border management was critical to addressing insecurity, illegal migration, smuggling and other transnational crimes affecting communities in northern Nigeria.

According to him, securing Nigeria’s borders requires stronger surveillance, better coordination among security agencies and improved welfare and equipment for personnel deployed to border communities.

He said Sokoto, being a border state, has a particular interest in policies that can strengthen border security while promoting legitimate trade and improving the livelihoods of residents living along the frontier.

The governorship aspirant also called for greater investment in border communities, arguing that development, employment opportunities and effective security measures should complement one another.

He maintained that political leaders should support policies capable of addressing the country’s security and economic challenges, irrespective of political differences.

The statement comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians across the country increasingly outlining their positions on national security and economic issues.
