Deportivo La Coruña have reached an agreement with Atlético Madrid to sign experienced Uruguay defender José María Giménez on a one year loan deal.

The agreement was reached on Tuesday, September 1, as Deportivo moved to complete a major deadline day addition following their return to La Liga.

Giménez, 31, is expected to spend the 2026/27 season with Deportivo, with the newly promoted club set to cover part of his salary during the loan spell.

The Uruguayan centre back has spent his entire European club career with Atlético Madrid after joining the Spanish side from Danubio in 2013. He has since established himself as one of the club’s most experienced defenders and has made more than 380 appearances for Atlético.

His departure on loan represents a significant change for a player who has been with the Madrid club for more than 13 years. Giménez has also been part of several successful Atlético teams, winning two La Liga titles, the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup among other honours.

Deportivo identified defensive reinforcement as one of their priorities after securing promotion back to Spain’s top flight. The club has now turned to Giménez for his experience and leadership as it prepares for the challenge of competing against some of the country’s biggest clubs.

The defender’s experience is expected to be particularly valuable to Deportivo’s younger players. His leadership at both club and international level could provide important stability as the Galician side seeks to establish itself in La Liga.

Giménez had not trained with Atlético’s first team earlier on Tuesday as negotiations over his future progressed. The move was subsequently agreed before the transfer deadline.

The loan also gives Atlético an opportunity to reduce part of the financial burden associated with the defender while allowing Giménez to secure regular first team football.

For Deportivo, the signing represents one of the biggest moves of their transfer window and strengthens a squad assembled for their first season back in La Liga after an eight year absence.

Giménez will now look to begin a new chapter at Riazor after more than a decade at Atlético Madrid.

The move is subject to the completion of the remaining formalities, but the agreement between the two clubs has been reached.
