Nvidia’s Potential Perplexity Investment Signals a Bigger Bet on AI Applications

Nvidia appears to be looking beyond its dominant position in AI chips.

The semiconductor giant is reportedly discussing an investment in Perplexity, the fast-growing AI search startup, as part of a funding round that could value the company at more than $30 billion, according to The Information. Reuters has not independently verified the report.

The potential deal would mark a significant jump in Perplexity’s valuation. The company was previously valued at about $20 billion, meaning the proposed funding round could lift its value by more than 50%.

Perplexity’s Rapid Growth

The reported investment comes as Perplexity’s business expands rapidly. Its annualized revenue has reportedly risen from less than $250 million at the beginning of 2026 to more than $750 million.

A key driver has been Perplexity Computer, an AI agent designed to automate computer-based tasks for professional users. The growth reflects a broader shift in the AI market from chatbots that primarily answer questions toward AI agents capable of completing tasks.

Perplexity has also attracted major investors, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and SoftBank, highlighting the growing competition to back companies positioned to benefit from the next phase of the AI industry.

Why Nvidia May Be Interested

For Nvidia, a potential investment in Perplexity would extend its AI strategy beyond hardware.

The company has become the dominant supplier of processors used to train and operate advanced AI systems. By investing in AI application companies, Nvidia can potentially strengthen its position across more layers of the technology ecosystem.

The move would also give Nvidia exposure to the rapidly developing market for AI-powered search and autonomous digital agents, where Perplexity is competing to establish itself as a major player.

A New Stage for the AI Race

The reported discussions underline how quickly valuations are rising for AI companies that can demonstrate strong revenue growth and real-world adoption.

Perplexity’s possible $30 billion-plus valuation suggests investors are placing increasing value on AI companies that can turn large-scale computing demand into commercial products and recurring revenue.

The company has previously indicated that it intends to pursue an IPO in 2028, giving it several years to expand its business before entering public markets.

If Nvidia ultimately participates in the funding round, the investment would reinforce a broader trend in the AI industry: the biggest technology companies are increasingly seeking influence not only over the infrastructure powering artificial intelligence, but also over the applications that consumers and businesses use every day.
