The All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State have exchanged accusations following the disruption of an empowerment programme organised by the Kwara Central APC Women Leader, Tawakalitu Agaka, popularly known as Hajia Tawa.
The programme, held on Saturday at Agaka’s family residence in Ilorin, reportedly provided cash support to 200 women, youths and widows.
According to PUNCH Online, trouble started when individuals suspected to be PDP supporters arrived at the venue and began chanting and confronting Agaka and APC supporters. Security personnel reportedly intervened to prevent the incident from escalating.
Reacting on Sunday, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Communications, Ibraheem Abdullateef, accused supporters of former Senate President Bukola Saraki and PDP governorship candidate Bolakale Kawu of attempting to bring political thuggery back to the state.
The PDP, however, rejected the allegation. Its Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, said the protesters were residents expressing dissatisfaction with the government and should not be labelled thugs.
The party also questioned the timing of the empowerment programme, alleging that the government had neglected the community and was only offering assistance ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PDP demanded an apology from Governor AbdulRazaq over the comments attributed to his aide, while the APC urged residents to reject what it described as anti democratic behaviour.
The dispute has further heightened political tensions in Kwara as the APC and PDP intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
