Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other political contenders ahead of the 2027 presidential election to present their records in public and allow Nigerians to assess their performance.
Obi said the forthcoming election should focus on measurable achievements, accountability and the ability of political leaders to improve the living conditions of Nigerians rather than on political rhetoric or personal attacks.
The former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians to scrutinise the records of those seeking their votes and compare their past performance with the promises they make ahead of the election.
According to Obi, political leaders should be prepared to account for their stewardship and demonstrate how their policies and decisions have affected the economy, security, education, healthcare, employment and other critical sectors.
He argued that the 2027 election provides an opportunity for Nigerians to demand greater accountability from political office holders and ensure that electoral choices are based on competence and verifiable records.
Obi has consistently advocated a shift from what he describes as identity-driven politics to issue-based political engagement, stressing the importance of evaluating leaders based on their contributions to national development.
He also called on political parties and presidential contenders to engage in constructive debates on the challenges facing the country and provide practical solutions rather than relying solely on campaign promises.
The former presidential candidate maintained that Nigerians deserve leaders who can demonstrate a clear understanding of the country’s challenges and provide effective strategies for addressing them.
His comments come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gradually intensify, with major political actors positioning themselves and building alliances across the country.
The ruling All Progressives Congress and opposition parties are expected to face increased scrutiny as Nigerians assess their respective records and proposed programmes ahead of the election.
Obi urged citizens to remain politically informed and demand transparency from all candidates seeking public office.
He said the focus should ultimately be on who can deliver better governance, strengthen the economy, improve security and create opportunities for Nigerians.
As the political contest begins to take shape, Obi’s call for candidates to defend their records is likely to add to the growing debate over performance, accountability and the direction Nigeria should take after the 2027 elections.
