A member of the United States Congress, Representative Riley Moore, has insisted that Nigeria should remain on the United States’ Country of Particular Concern, CPC, designation list, citing continued violence against Christian communities.

Moore made the position known in a post on his official X account while reacting to comments from the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.

The Congressman said the CPC designation should not be removed while what he described as radical Islamic terrorist attacks against Christians continue in parts of Nigeria.

Moore also backed the US State Department’s call for the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of Christian communities and hold perpetrators of violence accountable.

His comments followed renewed concerns over attacks in Plateau State and other parts of the Middle Belt, where several people have been killed and communities displaced.

The US designated Nigeria as a CPC in 2020 over concerns about religious freedom violations. Nigeria was removed from the list in 2021 but was returned to the designation under the Trump administration last year. The status is subject to periodic review by the US State Department.
