France’s consumer watchdog has fined British fast-fashion retailer Boohoo €2.3 million ($2.69 million) for deceptive practices, including misleading discounts and improper product labelling.
The Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) said Boohoo exaggerated discounts on its website, giving customers a false impression of the savings they were receiving.
According to the regulator, 40% of the promotions reviewed were not genuine price reductions, while 7% offered smaller discounts than advertised. In 48% of cases, the promotional prices were actually higher than previous prices.
The watchdog also accused Boohoo of using terms such as “leather” and “suede” to market synthetic products, in violation of French labelling regulations.
Boohoo had not immediately responded to a request for comment.
The fine comes amid a broader French crackdown on online fast-fashion retailers, particularly Chinese platforms Shein and Temu. French lawmakers approved legislation in June aimed at curbing what they describe as “disposable” clothing.
