The Port and Terminal Management Association of Nigeria has intensified efforts to attract investment and promote innovation across the country’s port and logistics sectors as stakeholders seek to improve efficiency, competitiveness and the movement of goods.

POTEMAN said its latest initiative is aimed at creating a platform for industry stakeholders to explore investment opportunities, exchange ideas and develop innovative solutions capable of addressing persistent challenges within Nigeria’s maritime and logistics ecosystem.

The programme is expected to feature keynote addresses, technical presentations, panel discussions and a competition designed to encourage young professionals in the port and terminal industry to develop practical solutions to sector challenges.

The focus on innovation comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to modernise its ports through technology, improved infrastructure and stronger private sector participation.

Port efficiency remains critical to the competitiveness of the Nigerian economy because delays in cargo handling, inadequate infrastructure and high logistics costs can increase the cost of importing and exporting goods.

Stakeholders have increasingly advocated the adoption of technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, Internet of Things systems, blockchain and digital platforms to improve cargo tracking, port operations and supply chain visibility.

Nigeria’s logistics sector also presents significant investment opportunities as demand for efficient movement and storage of goods continues to expand. The country’s growing e-commerce market, industrial activities and international trade have increased the need for modern logistics infrastructure and technology driven services.

Investment in port and logistics infrastructure has also gained momentum, with major private sector operators announcing fresh commitments to expand and modernise facilities. In May, APM Terminals pledged $600 million in new investment for port modernisation and logistics infrastructure in Nigeria, including the development of its operations at Apapa.

Such investments are expected to strengthen cargo handling capacity, improve operational efficiency and support Nigeria’s ambition to position its ports as competitive gateways for regional and international trade.

The government has also been pursuing reforms aimed at creating a more attractive environment for maritime investment. The establishment of the Nigeria Port Economic Regulatory Agency is expected to provide a dedicated framework for regulating port tariffs, promoting competition and protecting port users.

POTEMAN’s emphasis on investment and innovation therefore comes against the backdrop of broader efforts to transform Nigeria’s maritime sector and reduce the cost of doing business.

Industry stakeholders are expected to use the initiative to identify areas where technology, private capital and improved management practices can be deployed to address bottlenecks affecting port operations and logistics.

The association’s focus on young professionals is also expected to encourage new ideas and promote the development of locally driven solutions for the maritime industry.

A more efficient port and logistics system could have wider economic benefits by reducing transportation costs, improving supply chain reliability, supporting manufacturers and exporters, and strengthening Nigeria’s position in regional trade.

As investment interest grows, stakeholders are expected to continue pushing for policies that encourage innovation, improve infrastructure and create a more predictable operating environment for businesses.

The success of these efforts will depend on sustained collaboration among government agencies, port operators, terminal managers, logistics companies, investors and technology providers.
