Political parties and presidential candidates have signed the First National Peace Accord on issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The accord was signed on Tuesday in Abuja under the auspices of the National Peace Committee, in partnership with The Kukah Centre. Signatories pledged to reject violence, hate speech, personal attacks, misinformation and other actions capable of undermining the electoral process.
However, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, identified as presidential candidates of their respective parties, were absent from the ceremony.
President Bola Tinubu was also not physically present and was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, alongside several political party leaders and presidential candidates, attended the event.
The peace accord comes ahead of the official commencement of campaigns for the 2027 elections. INEC has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
